**DJ services are generally not utilized by groups with less then 40 guests**
The wedding DJ (aka the “Master of Ceremonies”) is responsible for several different aspects of the day, most notably the ceremony music, the microphone setups throughout the day, and of course, the music during the reception. Along with the Day-of-Coordinator, the DJ also plays a critical role in keeping the day on schedule, and making sure guests and bridal party don’t get confused about where or when they are supposed to be doing something. With my wedding planning services, you’ll have access to exclusive discount rates with one of the highest rated DJ companies in the state.
Do I need a dj for my wedding?
Hiring a DJ is ultimately a matter of personal preferences. As a professional wedding coordinator, I strongly urge all groups with 40+ guests to hire a DJ for their day, especially if they plan on having a dance-floor. Couple’s often think they can simply replace a DJ with a Spotify playlist, but actually the DJ’s job goes far beyond just playing the music. He orchestrates the day, keeps the energy going, and makes sure you and your guests know the “where, what, and when” of the day.
I know shelling out for a quality DJ may be hard on many budgets, but I’m here to tell you… it’s worth it! And no, I don’t work on commission haha.
how much does the dj cost?
As a professional Coordinator, I’ve seen DJ’s in Colorado range from $800 to $3,000, depending on services needed as well as location, group size, and quality. Some higher-end DJ services provide intricate lighting, fog machines, etc. which can cost even more.
Through my Colorado MicroWedding planning services, I work with a handful of the top rated DJ’s in the state, who offer their services to my couples at a discount rate of $1,400 for 6 hours on weekdays (this is a $200 discount off their usual services).
elopement dj?
If you’re doing a really small and simple wedding ceremony (aka an “elopement”), you really don’t need/want to hire a full wedding DJ. I’d recommend just brining along a Bluetooth speaking, and having your friend/family member play a song before and after the ceremony. That’s really all you need! More then likely, with a small group like this, you’ll be going to a restaurant afterwards for the reception so there won’t be a DJ needed for that either.
Live Music?
For traditional weddings, live music is a great way to add some fun to your wedding day. However, for small weddings, live musicians tend to be both logistically difficult to work with, and quite expensive. Here are some considerations…
Weather - Most small weddings do there ceremony outside, many musicians won’t play if it’s raining or excessively hot/cold. If your musician shows up to your event, and can’t play, they will still charge you.
Accommodations - Many live musicians will require seating, electrical hookup, or cover for their playing area. Often times this isn’t possible at the ceremony sties for small weddings.
Price - Small weddings often times just need the musician for an hour or less, but the musician is going to have to block off your date from other bookings, so they’ll want to be compensated enough to make it worth it. For this reason, prices can get incredibly steep even for “small” events.
For these reasons, I don’t personally work with or coordinate live music for my weddings, but if you are interested in getting more info, I can make some recommendations for great local options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is hiring a DJ necessary for elopements?
Elopements, which are typically very small and simple wedding ceremonies, often do not require a full wedding DJ. Instead, you can use a Bluetooth speaker and have a friend or family member play a song before and after the ceremony. Since elopements typically lead to a smaller gathering and may involve a restaurant reception, there is usually no need for the extra expense of a DJ in this case.
Do I need a DJ for my micro-wedding in Colorado?
If you have less than 40 guests—you don’t need a DJ!
If you have more than 40 guests, and are not having a dance floor—you probably don’t need a DJ!
If you have more than 40 guests, and are having a dance floor—you need a DJ
If you are having a larger group (and a dance floor), the decision to hire a DJ for your micro-wedding depends on your personal preferences. Some more informal weddings will just use a Spotify playlist, but if you are doing a more formal event I highly recommend hiring a professional. The DJ's role goes beyond playing music; they help orchestrate the day, maintain the energy, and provide essential guidance to ensure a smooth flow of events.
What is the role of a wedding DJ (Master of Ceremonies) in a micro-wedding?
Most small weddings, elopements, and micro-weddings DO NOT have a DJ.
However, if you are planning a more traditional style small wedding (that includes a dancefloor and 40+ guests), the wedding DJ, also known as the Master of Ceremonies (MC), plays a crucial role. They are responsible for various aspects of the day, including ceremony music, microphone setups, and providing music during the reception. This decides the overall environment that you will be married in. Additionally, they help maintain the schedule and ensure that guests and the bridal party are informed about where and when to be for various activities.
How much does hiring a DJ for a micro-wedding typically cost in Colorado?
The cost of hiring a DJ for a micro-wedding in Colorado can vary widely based on several factors, including the services required, location, guest count, and the DJ's quality and experience. Prices for Colorado DJs can range from $800 to $3,000 or more. Some high-end DJ services may offer additional features like lighting and fog machines, which can increase the cost.
Can I have live music at my elopement?
Yes! It is definitely possible to include live music in your small wedding, however, this can get quite expensive! Another thing to consider is that live musicians will often times have strict requirements about playing outside, and may require that you provide cover, seating, and/or electricity that may not be an option for small weddings.
So, decide carefully! Most of the couples I work with that want music simply bring along a Bluetooth speaker.
Can I request specific songs or genres for my wedding playlist?
Absolutely! Most micro-wedding DJs in Colorado are happy to accommodate your musical preferences. You can work with your DJ to create a playlist that reflects your taste and sets the desired mood for your micro-wedding, including special requests for key moments like the first dance or the processional.
How do I ensure that the DJ understands my vision for the micro-wedding?
Effective communication is key to ensuring your DJ understands and executes your vision for the micro-wedding. Schedule a consultation or planning meeting with your DJ to discuss your expectations, preferred songs, and the atmosphere you want to create. Providing a list of must-play and do-not-play songs can also help convey your preferences.
Do micro-wedding DJs also serve as MCs, and what does this entail?
Yes, micro-wedding DJs always double as MCs. The MC role involves:
Making announcements.
Introducing the couple and the bridal party.
Keeping the flow of the event smooth.
They help ensure everyone knows what's happening throughout the day and create a lively atmosphere
