Windy Point Wedding & Elopement Guide for 2026

Hey there! My name’s Iver Marjerison.
I’m a Colorado micro-wedding planner, and over the years I’ve helped plan hundreds of small weddings and elopements across the state. This guide covers everything you need to know about getting married at Windy Point.

Windy Point is one of the most scenic and convenient places to get married in Breckenridge, Colorado, offering panoramic views of Dillon Reservoir, the Tenmile Range, and surrounding alpine peaks. Located just a short drive from downtown Breckenridge along Swan Mountain Road, this overlook is a popular choice for couples planning an intimate wedding or elopement with minimal work, and awesome views!

Professional Opinion:
I’ve planned dozens of weddings at Windy Point over the years, and I think this spot is great for groups who are looking for a ceremony-only site in the Breckenridge area (this spot is significantly better than Sapphire Point). However, this location tends to be quite windy, so be careful with decorations. The biggest issue with this spot: the permits book out fast!

Everything You Need to Know About Getting Married at Windy Point

Windy Point is a “campground” site near Breckenridge, Colorado, that offers day rentals that are frequently used for weddings. They technically allow groups of up to 100, though I don’t suggest them for groups over 35.

Elevation: ~9,000
Max Group Size: 100 people
Permit Fee: $260
Accessibility: Late May through late September
Distance from Denver International Airport: Estimated 1.5 hours (without traffic)
Nearest Town: Breckenridge
Pros: This location offers privacy and nice photos for small weddings, at a very affordable price. It’s also very accessible and allows decorations and chairs. It’s also just down the road from the epic Lost Gulch Overlook—so you can do portraits there after the wedding.
Cons: The mountain views can be a bit lacking for the ceremony, and the lighting can be very harsh if you don’t time sunrise/sunset perfectly. The built-in seating is also a bit far from the amphitheater, so renting chairs is generally recommended.

Booking, Planning & Marriage license
First you’ll need to use the campground’s online booking portal to check their availability and secure your date. Then, you just need to make a timeline, get the marriage license, and secure any needed vendors, like photographer, officiant, etc.

Ceremony Sites
The “Lake Loop” has a scenic shoreline adjacent area that can be used for the wedding ceremony, and a covered picnic pavilion that can be used for the reception (not recommended). The “Forest Loop” (my top choice) has more dynamic views for the ceremony, but no picnic area, and requires a bit of an uphill hike.

Best Day, Month, and Time
Because this is a private venue, any day of the week you can get a permit for works well. For best season, mid June through mid October is the “peak” wedding season in Colorado, and generally when weather is the best. For optimal lighting, opt for a sunrise, or two hours before sunset.

Good to Know
The ceremony sites are not handicap accessible. Dogs are allowed on a leash. Alcohol is allowed at the campground sites. Music is allowed. Chairs and decorations are allowed (but must be non-invasive and leave no trace). There is designated parking. No throwing flowers or confetti. Lots more info…

How-to Plan a Wedding at Windy Point

  1. Pick a date and time
This site is available late May through late September. Sunrise or sunset is always best for photos! Learn the best time to get married in Colorado.

  2. Book the “Campground”
Use their online calendar to book your date. I prefer the “Forest Loop” which you can see at the top of this page, but the “Lake Loop” is on the shore if you want water in your photos.

  3. Hire your vendors
After the venue is booked, you can coordinate your officiant, photographer, and any additional vendors, making sure they comply with venue guidelines.

  4. Finalize logistics and timeline
Leading up to the wedding, you’ll confirm arrival times, and plans for the day with your vendors and guests.

  5. Get the Marriage License

Colorado makes getting a marriage license simple! You and your fiance simply need to go into a Colorado County Clerk during business hours to pick up the license. Larimer County has their own office in Breckenridge, they have limited availability though, so if you can’t get in you can go to any other county in Colorado. Here’s my full Colorado Marriage License Guide.

  6. Get Married!

On the day of the wedding, you and your guests will meet your wedding vendors at Windy Point. You’ll have the ceremony, sign the license, take photos, and then most groups simply head to a local restaurant to celebrate!

Windy Point Wedding FAQs

How much does it cost to get married at Windy Point?

There is a $260 reservation required to get married at Windy Point.

What is Windy Point and where is it located?

Windy Point Group Campground is a group-use campground and event area located along Swan Mountain Road on the eastern shore of Dillon Reservoir, just outside Breckenridge. It sits within the White River National Forest and offers expansive lake and mountain views.

Is Windy Point a private wedding location?

Generally speaking, the ceremony site is private, but the surrounding shoreline, trails, and roadways remain open to the public during your event. Other visitors may be walking trails, accessing the lake, or passing through the area during your ceremony.

How do you reserve Windy Point for a wedding?

Windy Point group sites are available by reservation only through Recreation.gov. Reservations can be made online or by phone, and both the Lake Loop and Forest Loop must be reserved in advance for wedding use. More info.

What are the two Windy Point group sites?

Windy Point has two reservable group areas: “The Lake Loop”, which includes a covered pavilion, grills, tables, restrooms, and parking. “The Forest Loop”, which includes a large gravel gathering area, fire pit, tables, restrooms, parking, and access to a grassy overlook for ceremonies. Each loop has different ceremony and setup rules.

Can you have a wedding ceremony at Windy Point?

Yes, but ceremony locations depend on which loop you reserve. At the Forest Loop, ceremonies are allowed at the grassy overlook at the top of the hill. At the Lake Loop, ceremonies are not allowed on the shoreline or below the high-water line. All ceremony locations are walk-in only.

Are vehicles allowed at ceremony locations?

No. Motorized, electric, or mechanized vehicles are prohibited beyond designated roads and parking areas. All supplies, décor, and equipment must be hand carried to ceremony and gathering areas.

Are tents, arches, or structures allowed for weddings?

No. Structures of any kind are prohibited, including tents, arches, awnings, arbors, or canopies. This applies to both the Forest Loop overlook and the Lake Loop gathering areas.

Are decorations allowed at Windy Point weddings?

Yes, but decorations must be temporary and leave no trace. Nothing may be attached to trees, vegetation, or natural features. All decorations must be removed at the end of your event.

At the Lake Loop pavilion, decorations may only be attached using the provided cables and hooks.

Are chairs allowed for Windy Point ceremonies?

Yes. Temporary chairs are allowed in designated hardened or gravel areas and at the Forest Loop grassy overlook. Chairs must stay within approved areas and may not encroach onto trails, shoreline, or vegetation.

Is Windy Point wheelchair accessible?

Parts of Windy Point are accessible.
The Lake Loop pavilion area and gravel paths are generally accessible.
The Forest Loop grassy overlook is not considered disabled accessible and requires walking up a hill.

Accessibility should be planned carefully based on your chosen site.

What time can vendors and guests arrive?

Check-in time is 2:00 PM, and check-out time is 11:00 AM the following day.
All vendors must adhere to these same timeframes for delivery, setup, and removal.

Failure to clear the site by check-out time can delay incoming groups.

Are vendors required to have special permits?

No additional vendor permits are required. However, the renter is fully responsible for all vendor actions, rule compliance, and any damage caused. Vendors must follow all site rules and time restrictions.

Can we bring alcohol to a Windy Point wedding?

Yes, alcohol is allowed at Windy Point, but only at the designated campground areas.

Are fires allowed at Windy Point?

Fires are restricted to designated metal fire rings or pedestal grills only. No other open burning is allowed. Fire restrictions may change seasonally, so it’s important to check with the Ranger District prior to your event.

Are dogs allowed at Windy Point weddings?

Yes. Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash at all times within the campground, ceremony areas, and surrounding land.

What wildlife precautions should couples be aware of?

Windy Point is active bear country. All food, beverages, trash, and scented items must be attended by an adult within 100 feet or stored in locked vehicles or food storage lockers. Improper food storage can attract wildlife and lead to fines or event disruption.

Are there quiet hours at Windy Point?

Yes. Quiet hours are from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. Noise travels easily across the lake and surrounding campgrounds, so ceremonies and celebrations must remain respectful.

Can we use the shoreline for our ceremony or photos?

No ceremonies or structures are allowed along the shoreline below the Lake Loop gathering area. The shoreline remains public land and must stay unobstructed.

Can guests swim or use watercraft during the event?

Swimming, jet skiing, water skiing, and scuba diving are not permitted in Dillon Reservoir. Boating access is available only through designated marinas.

Is camping allowed for wedding guests?

Camping is allowed only within designated gravel or hardened areas of the group site. Camping is prohibited in trees, hillsides, grassy areas, or anywhere outside the approved footprint.
