Lost Gulch Overlook Elopement Guide
Hey there! My name’s Iver Marjerison.
I’m a professional micro-wedding planner in Colorado, and over the years I’ve planned hundreds of small weddings and elopements. Here’s everything you need to know about getting married at Lost Gulch Overlook.
Lost Gulch Overlook is one of the most iconic elopement locations in Colorado, perched high above Boulder on Flagstaff Mountain with sweeping views of the Rocky Mountains and the city below. Located just a short drive from downtown Boulder—and about an hour from Denver International Airport—this breathtaking overlook is known for its dramatic 360-degree vistas, making it a stunning choice for both sunrise and sunset elopements.
However, like many popular outdoor wedding locations in Colorado, Lost Gulch comes with unique challenges—crowds, limited parking, and strict permit guidelines. In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to know about eloping at Lost Gulch Overlook, including the best times to visit, weather tips, parking and accessibility info, nearby places to stay and dine, and essential planning considerations to help you make the most of your Boulder elopement experience.
What the Internet Won’t Tell You About Lost Gulch
I’ve planned and officiated hundreds of weddings in Colorado over the years, and Lost Gulch is definitely one of the best in terms of photos. However, it is very small, and a VERY BUSY location, so unless you do sunrise, expect to have a lot of people in the area. If you’re looking for privacy, there are much better spots!
If Lost Gulch doesn’t work for you—don’t worry!
There are lots of beautiful places in Colorado to get married.

Why You Should Elope at Lost Gulch
The Views (Of Course): The unobstructed views of the plains, distant mountain ranges nestled against the forest provide the perfect dramatic backdrop for wedding photos both morning and evening.
Sunrise: Lost Gulch is an incredibly popular location. However, it still offers a sense of seclusion and privacy during sunrise. At sunset, it's not uncommon that the parking lot is overflowing with people seemingly everywhere, but at sunrise it's possible to have the area completely to yourself. If privacy is a top priority for you, we recommend off season, sunrise and weekdays. Keep in mind exclusivity to any public site is never guaranteed.
Easy to get to: Being just a few minutes drive from the heart of Boulder, Lost Gulch Overlook is relatively easy to reach compared to more remote mountain wedding locations. The short drive from the heart of Boulder is one of the most scenic short drives!
Why You Shouldn’t Elope at Lost Gulch
I’ve planned and officiated dozens of weddings at Lost Gulch over the past 7 years. It’s a beautiful location for photos, but very uncomfortable for the actual weddings ceremony. The location is small, it’s regularly crowded with people (and other photo shoots), and the parking is very limited. Unless you can do sunrise to beat the crowds, I strongly encourage my couples to do their ceremony at a private ceremony site nearby, and then use Lost Gulch after for the portraits session.
1. Weather Factors
The weather in the Colorado mountains is known to be fickle. Even in summer, sudden thunderstorms or temperature drops can occur. Hail is a possibility. Because of the high elevation, the wind can hit this spot fiercely! Regardless of the forecast, we always recommend preparing for it to be colder than you expect. This looks like: bringing extra layers and wearing good socks and shoes! In the spring, winter and at sunrise we highly recommend bringing gloves and hand warmers as well. While winter weddings can be magical when properly prepared, the rocks here pose a threat of being iced over and dangerous.
2. Elevation and Heights
Lost Gulch sits at over 7,000 feet above sea level. If you or your guests are not accustomed to the high altitude, there could be an adjustment time period needed. It's important to stay hydrated and take it slow, especially if you plan on hiking around the area before or after the ceremony. When possible, we recommend having at least a day or two to adjust to the elevation if you are flying in from a state with lower elevations.
The most scenic views at Lost Gulch are taken of people after they navigate some rocky, boulder formations and post up cliffside, pressed against the landscape. We have had clients in the past who have decided to ditch the views to stay away from the cliffside. If you have a serious aversion to heights, this may not be the spot for you.
3. Popularity and Crowds
Due to its expansive views and close proximity to Boulder, Lost Gulch Overlook is a popular spot for hikers, tourists, and photographers and college kids (a lot of whom are partaking in a smoke sesh). This means there’s a chance that your ceremony could coincide with other visitors enjoying the spot (and often college kids offering you a hit of their blunt). If you’re planning a truly private event, we highly recommend sunrise or finding a spot better suited to your privacy priorities. We have several recommendations on rentable areas nearby that are more likely to give you privacy for your ceremony.
The area is relatively small, so larger weddings or elopements with many guests may not fit comfortably. With a micro wedding or small elopement, you’re more likely to have the space to yourselves, but larger groups may have to get creative with the setup.
3. Parking and Accessibility
The parking area at Lost Gulch Overlook can fill up quickly, particularly on weekends, sunset and during peak tourist seasons. Because of this, we recommend carpooling and keeping your vehicle count as low as possible. The overlook parking lot requires a $5 parking permit if your vehicle is not registered in Boulder County.
While Lost Gulch Overlook is accessible in terms of proximity to the city, we absolutely do not recommend this location if you or any of your guests have impaired mobility, use a wheelchair, etc. Essentially, the overlook is a cluster of uneven rocks and boulders that do not create a proper pathway. If mobility is a concern of yours, we can give you a list of options that may be better suited for you!
